Young & Short are film distribution series that define their generation. They are collections of short films exploring themes that are important to young people and that they enjoy.

The films – intended not only for their peers – are selected by children and young people in the age groups 4–8, 9–11, 12–14 and 15–19. They capture the essence of their generation through the selected short films, chosen from the very best that European short film for young people has to offer. We then distribute the Young & Short programmes to Czech cinemas and schools, offering them not only a high-quality cinematic experience but also a specially designed programme featuring introductory talks by experts, worksheets, discussions, interesting guests and workshops.

Contemporary cinema aimed at young people struggles to reach its target audience – individual films are usually shown only sporadically at film festivals and, particularly in the Czech context, often fail to make it into mainstream cinema distribution for various reasons.

The Young & Short project aims to counter this trend through its format. As part of a weekend programme, it brings the best festival short films to young audiences and, following expert-led discussions, lets them decide which films they themselves would like to see included in Czech distribution.

Young & Short thus challenges the traditional concept of cinemas and gives young people the opportunity to become an active part of the Czech film scene. The programme is curated by young jurors who have passed a selection process based on their motivation, relationship with film, and demonstrated ability to think critically about and reflect on film. This results in a unique film programme that responds to today’s world, dominated by audiovisual content, over the quality and selection of which young people would otherwise have little influence.

The aim of the project is to bring short films selected from the most prestigious European film festivals – such as Cannes, the Venice International Film Festival, Sundance, the Berlinale and the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival – to young audiences. We complement the very best of European short film with notable Czech contributions. All of this spans genres, cultures and cinematic approaches.

In this way, we are able to develop critical and aesthetic thinking among young people in an unconventional and entertaining manner. At the same time, we give them the opportunity to inspire each other with their views and attitudes on a peer-to-peer level.
